Afternoon Visit Overview
Start your journey after lunch at 1:30 PM from Roorkee and head towards Motichur or Chilla Gate, which
take around 45 minutes by car. This timing allows time for park entry, getting tickets, and joining the
afternoon safari, which typically runs from 2:00 PM to 5:00 or 6:00 PM, depending on the zone and season.
About Rajaji National Park
Rajaji National Park, spanning over 820 sq km across Uttarakhand, features diverse terrain ranging from
dense Sal forests to riverine landscapes. It is home to over 500 elephants, leopards, tigers, deer, boar,
sloth bear, and 400+ bird species. The park is divided into multiple safari zones—Chilla, Motichur,
Jhilmil, and Ranipur—with each offering unique wildlife and scenery.
- Jeep Safari: The most recommended method to explore Rajaji is the Jeep Safari, best experienced in the afternoon since wildlife is active near water sources after the heat peaks.
- Wildlife Spotting: Afternoon hours give higher chances of seeing elephants, deer (sambar, spotted, barking), wild boar, leopards, peacocks, and several bird species, as animals emerge for feeding and drinking.
- Birdwatching: The park is a paradise for over 300 species of birds, especially kingfishers, hornbills, raptors, peafowl, and woodpeckers. Consider bringing binoculars and a bird guidebook for a richer experience.
- Nature Walks & Hiking: Some zones, especially Jhilmil and Motichur, offer tranquil trails ideal for short, guided walks. These can be tailored for families, photography, or experiencing the flora and smaller fauna.
- After Lunch 1:30 PM: Depart Roorkee, arrive by 2:15 PM at your chosen park gate. Prioritize Motichur for birding and elephants, or Chilla for tiger and riverside views.
- 2:15–2:30 PM: Complete entry formalities, collect your tickets and meet your guide/safari driver. If not pre-booked, expect some waiting for spot safari seats.
- 2:30–5:30 PM: Enjoy a 3-hour Jeep Safari. Spot wildlife, pause for photography, and learn about the ecology from your guide. Guides often point out hidden animals and birds, enhancing the experience.
- 5:30–6:00 PM: End your safari, grab refreshments at nearby canteens or restaurants, such as Canteen Shantikunj or Hotel Shivalaya, both offering vegetarian options and casual seating.
- 6:00 PM onwards: Optionally, stroll near the Chilla Barrage or visit Jhilmil Jheel for sunset views. Begin the return journey to Roorkee, relaxed and fulfilled.
- Book the jeep safari in advance to guarantee slots—online or by phone is quickest.
- Dress lightly in earth tones for comfort and wildlife safety.
- Carry water, hats, and insect repellent, as the afternoon can be warm and buggy.
- Keep noise levels low during the safari for better animal encounters.
- Photography is permitted, so bring cameras or smartphones for exceptional nature shots.
- Safaris operate in two shifts, and the afternoon shift is perfect for those starting after lunch.
What Makes Afternoon the Best Time
- Many animals venture out in search of food and water.
- Bird activity peaks, offering opportunities for vibrant birdwatching.
- Soft lighting creates stunning photography conditions.
- Lower visitor traffic than the morning, leading to quieter trails and less crowding.
This detailed schedule will ensure a comfortable, educational, and memorable afternoon exploration at
